- hypothesisAim of the study is to determine how often muscle strength measurements should be repeated, using a hand-held dynamometer to obtain a maximal muscle strength measurement
- Healt Condition(s) or Problem(s) studiedHealthy elderly , Muscle strength
- Inclusion criteriaInclusion: Subjects have to be at least 65 and maximal 85 years of age. Able to walk at least 20 meters with or without support and be able to rise form a chair without help.
- Exclusion criteriaExclusion criteria: Systolic and diastolic blood pressures which exeed 159/100 respectively, surgical interventions, osteoporosis, dementia, chronic prednisone use, cerebro vascular accidents within the last half year, cognitive impairments witch influence mobility and-or the understanding or performance of the measurements.

- Brief summaryMuscle strength is measured to quantify decrease and to evaluate the effect of rehabilitation programs. Muscle strength can reliable be measured with hand-held dynamometry. Recently we conducted a study in which muscle strength of elderly subjects was measured at two separate occasions. We found systematic differences between measurement day one and measurement day two. The results of measurement day two were systematic higher compared to day one. This finding was also reported in comparable studies. It is unclear how often muscle strength measurements should be repeated to obtain a reliable and valid maximal muscle strength measurement. The Netherlands
