- Brief summaryEmergency Department crowding is a problem which arises worldwide. Compared to other Western countries there does not seem to be a major crowding problem in the Netherlands yet, but there are publications that suggest that there is an increasing frequency of crowding in the Dutch Emergency Departments.
Crowding and a longer length of stay are associated with negative patient related outcomes.

To date there has not been any study which investigates the patient characteristics which are associated with a longer length of stay in the Emergency Department in the Netherlands.

The aim of this study is to identify the patient characteristics which are associated with a longer length of stay in the Emergency Department in a large general hospital in the Netherlands
