- Brief summarySpeech and language problems are one of the most reported developmental problems in children. Identification of children at risk for speech and language problems may lead to appropriate follow-up and interventions at a young age, when chances for improvement are best. In the last decade various instruments are developed to detect speech and language problems in young children (NCJ guideline for Child Health Care, Siméa Guideline for primary schools). However, none of these instruments has proved satisfying psychometric properties and the effectiveness of the screening methods are unknown. The aim of this study is to develop a standardized and validated uniform screening instrument for speech and language delays in children from 1 to 6 years of age (ELS-NL).
