- InterventionsWe will prospectively evaluate consecutive patients with ischemic stroke or TIA with undetermined cause after standard diagnostic evaluation as part of routine stroke work-up. All patients will undergo TTE by experienced ultrasound technicians or cardiologists in each participating center. The potential impact of the echocardiographic findings on patient management strategy chosen for secondary stroke prevention will be independently evaluated by a neurologist and cardiologist.
- Primary outcomeThe proportion of patients with TTE findings that result in change in therapeutic management.
- Secondary outcomeThe proportion of patients with potential clinically relevant echographic findings (diagnostic yield).
- TimepointsThe study will run for a period of 3 years, with an inclusion period of 24 months.

- Brief summaryThe Dutch CBO guideline for stroke 2016 recommends transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) in all patients with ischemic stroke or TIA of undetermined cause. The scientific basis of this recommendation, however, is debatable. We aim to develop a prediction model to select patients who are more likely to have TTE abnormalities which alter clinical management in order to improve the diagnostic and therapeutic yield of TTE in these patients.
